‘Sirens’ – Pearl Jam

The other week, I mentioned that I was going to share one of Pearl Jam’s latest songs off the album that’s due out in, well, perhaps a matter of days by now! That reminds me of a desire to place an order. It’s been half-a-year since I bought any new music and I always look forward to new work from this band. Anyway, this is Sirens; the second single to be released from Lightning Bolt.

When I first heard it, I was a little unsure, as it is a different sound to Mind Your Manners which, I’m assuming was a (successful) one-off attempt at creating a punk rock track. This one, to me, has the kind of ‘US TV series feel’ that reminds me of Unthought Known from the band’s previous album (ironically, that track first premièred in an episode of the ill-fated Flash Forward).

There were several other tracks a bit like this on 2009’s Backspacer album – it’s shocking and quite saddening to think that we’re already talking about music that was released four-years ago! Listening to this for the first time, I wasn’t immediately overcome and I got a sense it was one of those tracks written and recorded to almost emphasise Eddie Vedder‘s powerful vocals. I want to say that this is a trend that’s developed since his Into the Wild solo album in 2007 but then, I’ve probably just become more aware of his own ambition.

I really like this track and I hope that you can appreciate it in some way. It’s not at all like the ‘grunge’ sound that Pearl Jam are best known for and if not for Vedder’s vocals, maybe it would be hard to distinguish this from the sound of one of several other bands… But I like it and I’m looking forward to their new album (I do hope that this new CD lasts a bit longer than the 35 minutes or-so of 2009…).

If you can ever decipher (word-for-word) what Eddie sings in a song then your hearing is remarkable! Lyrics are below for the rest of us and perhaps you’ll also notice that, for several verses including the first two, the song plays and sounds as though the words don’t fit… I particular like the lines: “If I think too much, I can’t get over

‘Sirens’

Hear the sirens, hear the siren
Hear the siren, hear the circus all go found
I hear the sirens more and more in this here town
Let me catch my breath to breathe then reach across the bend

Just to know we’re safe, I am a grateful man
This light is pit, alive and I can see you clear
I could take your hand, and feel your breath
For feel that someday this will be over
I pull you close, so much to lose

Knowing that, nothing lasts forever
I didn’t care, before you were here
A distant laughter, with the everafter
But, all things change, let this remain

Hear the sirens covering distance in the night
The sound, echoing closer, will they come for me, next time?

For every choice, mistake I made, is not my plan
To see you in the arms of another man
And if you choose to stay, I’ll wait, I’ll understand

Oh, it’s a fragile thing, this life we lead, if I think too much, I can’t
get over
When by the graces, by which we live our lives with death over our
shoulders
Want you to know, that should I go, I always loved you, held you high above
too
I studied your face, the fear goes away.

Guitar solo

It’s a fragile thing, this life we lead, if I think too much, I can’t get
over
When by the graves, by which we live our lives with death over our
shoulders
Want you to know, that should I go, I always loved you, held you high above
too
I studied your face, the fear goes away, the fear goes away, the fear goes
away.
