‘Sirens’ – Pearl Jam

The other week, I mentioned that I was going to share one of Pearl Jam’s latest songs off the album that’s due out in, well, perhaps a matter of days by now! That reminds me of a desire to place an order. It’s been half-a-year since I bought any new music and I always look forward to new work from this band. Anyway, this is Sirens; the second single to be released from Lightning Bolt.

‘Release Me’

I’m wanting to write but the words aren’t quite there. I’ve never been great at pin-pointing a thought, let alone determining where it’s come from. I can’t decided whether to try and write here or whether to e-mail my friend privately, as I know she would be there. Maybe I just need some more time to think, without going over it all too much.

My intention today was to share with you a song this evening. Several hours ago, it was going to be the second single from Pearl Jam‘s forthcoming album (which I can barely stop whistling at work and replaying in my mind). Perhaps you’ll have to wait until next week for that one, if you’re not already off to YouTube.

But another Pearl Jam song popped up on my feed earlier on and that’s what I’ve decided to share. A track that has always resonated a sense of power with untamed emotion. This live recording barely disappoints.

Although, I’m open to interpretations as to what happens to Eddie Vedder right before the end! 🙂

And, the lyrics…

‘Wind of Change’ – The Scorpions

It’s Monday evening and I feel in the mood to share a song that I’ve been holding in my mind for the past three weeks. That’s partially because, after hearing it many, many times on the radio, I’ve finally learned both its title and the name of the artist! I’ve always known the Scorpions for other tracks and a slightly heavier sound. So, even though the vocals were somewhat familiar, I didn’t realise it.

There’s no real relevance (for me) in the lyrics (which you can read below). I just like the sound of what I used to know as “The Whistling Song“… 😉

‘Easter’ – Marillion

This is a song that I’d like to share with you today for two reasons… First, that I heard on the radio earlier during my new-found lunchtime ‘solitude’. Secondly, each and every time I’ve heard this song, it touches me. I found myself at the point of almost shedding a tear; eyes closed, as the realisation came that it was almost time to return to work.

Marillion are a band I hadn’t even heard of before I discovered Planet Rock at Christmas 2009. This is a beautiful song and I can remember how I used to believe that Phil Collins was the singer in this band… Or was that Fish?! To be honest with you; I’m still uncertain as to whether it’s Collins or Peter Gabriel providing the vocals to many Genesis songs! 😛

‘Starlight’ – Muse

There was a time when the prospect of owning a Muse album excited, back in the early noughties. I’ve seen distanced myself from the band with their more mainstream style. But, there’s one song that seems to play more frequently on Planet Rock than any of their others and it’s certainly one that I’ve grown an attachment to.

Matt Bellamy has a great voice and originally, a style that seemed to surprise a lot of people when the band first ’emerged’. Mostly, it’s for those lines about just wanting to hold someone in my arms.

I was supposed to see my friend again today but, she cancelled it (for personal reasons) only a couple of hours in advance. I won’t bother to try and deny or even question my disappointment. I know our time and that opportunity will come again. In the mean time, I have another friend’s birthday celebration to attend this evening and I must get myself out to do a group walk on Sunday, as there’s one that starts only a few miles from home.

Speaking of which, I’ve been out to view potential place to rent this afternoon! I like it and the meeting with the agent went well. It’s the only available place that I can realistically afford right now (on a monthly basis) but I really need to sit down and look at how feasible that first month would be, with all the relevant fees, a deposit and the advanced payment of rent that would be required… I had a good feeling that it would be a space for me to ‘create’; certainly with my writing and perhaps also with music some day.

Today’s song (its title) also reminds me of internet dating in general, as there was one girl (guess her username!) who I felt was a near-‘perfect’ match for me, based on the shy natured outlined in her profile… She never responded to my message, which I think tells you something about the world of online dating… Perhaps that in spite of appearances and first impressions, it’s no more transparent than finding someone away from the computer screen.

Please read below to find the lyrics for this song.

‘Darkness’ – Disturbed

There’s a song that came to my mind about a week ago and I’ve been eager to share it with you ever since. Actually, this one creeps back in to my mind on a frequent basis. I’d be surprised if it hasn’t grazed my conscious mind at least once each week for the past eleven years!

It’s one that I’m almost ‘afraid’ to share. I first heard this song when I bought the band’s album, at the age of 17. I was heading towards a low patch of my own during my A-Levels and I used to worry that this song would make me feel worse; as if I shouldn’t ever allow myself to listen to it. In fact, there’s a song on Staind‘s ‘Break the Cycle‘ album that I would always skip… I’ll share that one on another day.

But, ‘Darkness’ was soothing. I found comfort in David voice, the piano keys that didn’t belong on this album and ‘those three words‘ that I could relate to; over and over again.

I’ve grown away from this band (and a lot of metal, in general) in the years since but, if I was to choose just one track of theirs from the two albums I own, to sit inside a playlist on my iPod… There is no question.

I don’t wish for people to read anything in to the timing of this as I am okay. In fact, I’m planning to write a positive post of gratitude tomorrow evening, in preparation for my CBT assessment on Thursday. 😉 If anything is wrong at this moment, it’s that I can’t seem to stop listening to Lana Del Ray’s album at the minute! I’m also in a bit of a Chili Peppers phase at the minute too (everything pre-2006). 😎

New CDs

Last week, I shared with you the two books I recently bought from Amazon. I was still waiting the arrival of two CDs to complete my latest trilogy and, after a possible delay with the recent weather, they arrived yesterday.

Two recent albums from John Frusciante and Lana Del Ray's debut, which is now a year old.

Two recent albums from John Frusciante and Lana Del Ray’s debut, which is now a year old.

To start off, there are two recent albums from John Frusciante; best know and previously a member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers on two occasions. I’ve shared one of his solo tracks on this blog before but, his own work remains relatively unknown to most. I’m a big fan of his work, even though I haven’t given his previous album (The Empyrean) much of a listen. These are still yet to make their way on to my iPod but the artwork alone reminds me of the albums John was releasing a decade ago (two of my favourites are from that era).

With that, my ‘big secret’ this time is that I’ve been curious about Lana Del Ray’s debut album for the past twelve months! There was one track that struck a chord with me – I can’t be bothered to check for its name now but, it might have been the title track; Born to Die. I look forward to seeing what the rest of the CD is like, as this is a bit different to my usual preference for ‘noise’. 😛 She’s the first female artists (that I can think of) to have really caught my attention since Katie Melua (I also own her first two albums).

Again, this one really needs to go on to my iPod before I listen to it – which then makes me wonder why I bother buying CDs… 😛 I was also surprised that all three discs arrived in the classical ‘jewel’ cases, when I’d assumed that modern CDs were being released in slim, card sleeves now… Yes, it has been a while since I purchased any new music! 😉

Last time I tried to rip some new tunes from my CDs, my laptop (through the power of iTunes) managed to re-produce several CDs in a terrible distorted state that was unbearable, even to my ears. I’ve tried following the advice of many comments found through Google searches but, this still happens, even when I attempt to simple play the CD in a non-Apple program. That does suggest a potential problem with my disc drive but I’m still yet to find a cause (or a cure).
